Top Kenyan journalist to edit BBC's Focus on Africa and Network Africa

Joseph Warungu has been appointed Editor of the BBC's flagship programmes Focus on Africa and Network Africa.

He will take over from veteran journalist Robin White when he retires in May.

Joseph started his journalistic career with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation and the Kenyan Television Network before joining the BBC Swahili Service in 1992.

He is currently East African Editor for the BBC African Services based in Nairobi.

As a former presenter of both Focus on Africa and Network Africa, Joseph Warungu says he is thrilled with his new job: "This is one of the most challenging and responsible jobs in the whole of African journalism.

"More than 20 million listeners all over Africa rely on the BBC to keep them in touch with the continent.

"I intend to build on the formidable reputation which Robin White has established for both programmes, strengthening our reporting of Africa and our links with partner stations."

Kari Blackburn, Head of BBC African Services, is delighted with the appointment: "Robin White is a hard act to follow. He has edited the programme for more than 30 years, but if anybody can do it, it is Joseph Warungu. He has an excellent track record and close links with the continent."

Notes to Editors

Focus on Africa and Network Africa can be heard on FM in more than 70 cities and towns all over Africa and on shortwave all over the continent.

Focus on Africa is broadcast at 1500, 1700 and 1900 GMT.

Network Africa goes out at 0330, 0430 and 0530 GMT in East Africa and additionally at 0630 and 0730 GMT in West Africa.

The BBC World Service has a global audience of 150 million, a third of them in Africa where it broadcasts in nine languages - English, Swahili, Hausa, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Somali, Arabic, French and Portuguese.
