ABOUT THE BBC
FACTUAL & ARTS TV

Glenwyn Benson appointed BBC TV's overarching factual commissioning head

Glenwyn Benson, currently Director of Factual and Learning, has been appointed to the newly created role of Controller, Factual Television for BBC Television.

Greg Dyke, Director-General of the BBC, said today: "Glenwyn has an outstanding reputation and she will now give a single focus to the BBC commissioning process for factual programmes across the BBC's television portfolio, which is in the interests of creativity and producing outstanding programmes for our audiences."

The creation of a single Controller of Factual Television to oversee the entire TV slate, amounting to more than £300 million, is one of the key changes to result from a review of factual commissioning, led by Director of Television Jana Bennett, to improve the ambition, co-ordination and flow of factual ideas to BBC Television.

With her distinguished reputation, Glenwyn will deliver strong creative leadership to a complex genre area, with the commissioning of six different genres being brought together under her single leadership, including specific individuals responsible for independent commissions for each factual genre.

Recruitment will now begin for a single director to head the BBC's Factual & Learning production division on the Executive Committee.

Glenwyn will continue in her current role until a successor is found.

Jana Bennett said: "Glenwyn is the best possible person for this role and I'm delighted she wanted to do it. Having someone of her professional stature as a single factual head will connect the UK's factual production base with BBC commissioning in a simple, logical way, ensuring that we have the important, ambitious projects in place, across all the channels, for the next 10 years. "

Glenwyn Benson said: "The BBC is the largest investor in factual programmes in the UK and we want to maximise the impact and use of this investment under a joined up strategy.

"Now is absolutely the right time to think big, innovate across genres and platforms, and invest for the long term. We really can't move forward without these changes."

Glenwyn will take responsibility for the factual commissioning strategy and overall budget, ensuring that there is a level playing field between the in-house factual production centres and factual independent producers, and for ensuring that all regional and national quotas are met.
