Pobol y Cwm actress scoops award

Pobol y Cwm actress Alex Roach has scooped up a prestigious award for her role in the BBC Wales drama series.

Alex, from Ammanford, won the award for Best Child Actor in a Soap category in the Annual Children in Entertainment Awards.

She was presented with her prize by Denise van Outen at an award ceremony at London's Grosvenor Hotel.

Alex, 15, who plays Elin in BBC Wales' long-running daily series Pobol y Cwm, shown on S4C, says the announcement came as a complete surprise to her.

"I'm absolutely shocked. I was up against EastEnders' Steven Beale and I thought he'd win," she said.

"I had to go up and make a speech! I thanked by parents and Mark Jermin, my drama teacher. I've learnt a lot from him in the past and hopefully I will learn more in the future.

"This award is a great boost for me."

Mark Jermin, who runs the Mark Jermin Stage School in Swansea, paid tribute to Alex's acting abilities.

"She's an outstanding student. She's a fantastic young actress, as this award proves," he said.

"She'd done various work before Pobol y Cwm, she had a small part in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, but the part of Elin has given her an opportunity to take on a challenging role."

Alex eventually hopes to study at the Welsh College of Music and Drama and follow a career in acting.

Bethan Jones, Pobol y Cwm Producer, also congratulated Alex after she received her award on Sunday night (16 February 2003).

"We're all delighted. Alex is a talented young actress and she's taken on the role of Elin with enthusiasm," he said.

"Elin's recent storylines have been challenging and demanding, but Alex has tackled them with eagerness and dedication."
