BBCi
homepage gets a multicolour facelift
The
BBCi homepage at www.bbc.co.uk
relaunched today (Wednesday 20 November) with a vibrant new look.
Up
to 18 different colour schemes can be seen on the homepage, influenced
by the time of day, the promotional picture window and the links
the user clicks on.
BBCi's
design team has developed a digital "patina" based on
the colour of the main promotional image, which spreads out across
the page in various hues.
In
addition to this, a "digital colour footprint" shows users
the areas of the homepage they click on most.
For
example, users who click on Sport regularly will see the pigmentation
of the sport area of the homepage become darker, while less visited
areas will be lighter.
Steve
Rogers, Head of Production for BBCi, said: "We received some
criticism at the time of the BBCi launch last year for the site
being 'a bit grey'.
"It's
a subject we're now addressing with a fantastically innovative looking
homepage that not only delivers in terms of functionality and usability,
but also character."
The
BBCi website was re-engineered in November 2001 to create a portal
type design and allow a greater breadth of content to be represented
on the homepage.
Usability
and navigation were reworked to make the site easy to use and fast
to load.
The
latest redesign is intended to energise the user's experience and
develop BBCi's personality to add more emotion and colour to the
site.
Notes

main promotional picture window is updated four times daily.
