BBC 7 poll to find the greatest comic

To mark the launch of BBC 7 the BBC is asking radio listeners to cast their votes for the greatest comic of all time.

Are the true comedy greats the old school - The Goons, Tony Hancock, Spike Milligan, Frankie Howerd, Les Dawson - or today's favourites - The League Of Gentlemen, Steve Coogan, Paul Merton?

Was Kenneth Williams funnier than Julian Clary? Does Eddie Izzard raise more laughs than Spike Milligan? Are Jennie Éclair and Dawn French greater than Hattie Jacques and June Whitfield?

People can vote for their favourites via the BBC 7 website on or by ringing BBC 7 Information Line on 0800 100 700.

Voting opens on Wednesday 13 November and closes on Wednesday 11 December. The winner will be announced on launch day (Sunday 15 December) and those voting for the winning comic will enter a draw to win a digital radio.
