Barbara Windsor to take well-deserved break from EastEnders

The BBC has announced that after eight long and happy years with EastEnders, Barbara Windsor will take a break from the programme next year to recharge her batteries, and those of her alter ego, landlady Peggy Mitchell.

Barbara is still fighting fit, and will be appearing on screen right up to the summer of 2003, but it was felt that this is the right time for her to take a well-deserved year off before returning to the Queen Vic with renewed vigour in 2004.

Barbara Windsor said: "This has been a very hard decision for me to make, because I'm so happy here on EastEnders, but it's been a long time without a proper break, and I just feel some time off would be good for me, and probably the character too.

"But I'm certainly looking forward to coming back. EastEnders is where my heart is, it's like my home, and this is where I see myself ending my career."

Louise Berridge, Exec Prod, EastEnders said: "Barbara has been an absolute trouper for more than eight years on this show with never more than a fortnight off in all that time.

"Of course we will all miss her enormously, but on a show as long-running as this one, it is obviously important for the artists to take occasional breaks. We hope she has a great time, and look forward to bringing her back with a big story in 2004."
