Linda Smith voted the "Wittiest Living Person"

Comedy writer and performer Linda Smith has been voted "the Wittiest Living Person" by listeners to BBC Radio 4's Word Of Mouth series.

Word Of Mouth presenter Michael Rosen surprised Linda at a recording of her new comedy series Linda Smith's A Brief History Of Timewasting to give her a silver cup marking her success.

Listeners said of her: "She's sharp and quick with her quips but warm and compassionate too, and can create a world in a few words. She's brilliant."

Word Of Mouth staged the competition to mark its 10th birthday and the results will be announced in the programme broadcast tomorrow (Friday 31 May 4.00pm) on Radio 4.

Stephen Fry came second in the poll.
