New
comedy heads for South Wales valleys
Gareth
Gwenlan, the comedy guru best known for producing Only Fools &
Horses, has teamed up with Welsh comedian Boyd Clack - who wrote
and starred in cult hit Satellite City - for his first major comedy
production in Wales.
The
six-part valleys-based sitcom High Hopes is being filmed around
Merthyr Tydfil, Porth, Trehafod, Dinas, Penygraig, Tredegar, Aberdare
and Maerdy, with BBC Wales' new Head of Comedy Gwenlan leading the
cast and crew as director/producer.
Revolving
around a self-appointed professor of crime and loveable rogue called
Fagin (Robert Blythe, The Lifeboat), his eccentric Mam (Margaret
John, Crossroads) and a pair of homeless teenage scallywags, Hoffman
(Steven Meo, Belonging) and Charlie (Ben Evans, Honk), High Hopes
takes a sideways look at the life and larger-than-life characters
in the fictitious valleys town of Cwm Pen-ol - a place where a life
of crime is de rigeur. The finished series is due to be screened
on BBC Wales later this year.
Comedy
fans are also being invited to laugh along at a sneak preview, with
a limited number of free tickets available for studio recordings
which will take place over the next few weekends at BBC Wales in
Llandaff, Cardiff.
The
recording dates are 19 and 26 May and 2, 8, 16 and 22 June. Anyone
interested in being part of the audience should call 0870 013 1812.
