ABOUT THE BBC

6 Music from the BBC

The BBC launches its first new national music radio station in 32 years

The BBC today (4 February) announced details of its new music radio station –

6 Music. The station is the first national music station the BBC has launched in 32 years. The all-new, digital service will go live for the first time on Monday 11 March, 2002 when Phill Jupitus opens the mic at 7.00am to present the network’s breakfast show.

6 Music is a station for listeners who are passionate about rock and pop music.

The all-new line-up of presenters includes Phill Jupitus, Liz Kershaw, Andrew Collins, Craig Charles and Gideon Coe.

Jenny Abramsky, Director of BBC Radio and Music says: “The birth of 6 Music marks a new era for people who are absolutely passionate about their music – not only all the great rock and pop music to come out of the past 40 years but also the new artists that are emerging today. I know that armed with the talents and skills of the presenters, production teams and technical staff, 6 Music will make a new and distinctive contribution to the BBC’s music portfolio.”

The network will offer its audience unique interactivity on a daily basis, enabling them to select their favourite classic concert recordings from the vast BBC archive.

The network can be accessed via DAB digital radio, digital satellite television and the internet www.bbc.co.uk/6music.

John Sugar, Programme Editor, 6 Music says: “This network champions the very best in rock and popular music, from the late Sixties through to today. 6 Music is about where the music’s been, where it is right now, and where it’s going to. The music is defined by its quality, credibility, and timelessness. One thing that unites all our presenters and the production team is their passion for music.”

The network’s music output will not be dictated by the charts or influenced by fashion trends. It will cover a large range of popular music genres and artists giving a national platform to the more obscure and less commercial tracks that rarely receive airtime on radio. It will also play an important role in discovering and championing new musical and broadcasting talent.

6 Music features a rich mix of contemporary and classic artists that range from the likes of The Clash, Patti Smith and New Order, through to Sly & The Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix and Public Enemy. The network will also champion some of the best emerging music talent like Muse, Turin Brakes, Elbow and many others.

6 Music will also include highlights from 40 years of bespoke sessions, many of which contain unique, otherwise unavailable recordings. There will also be re-runs of definitive BBC music documentaries, which reveal the true stories at the heart of the music.
