Ruxandra Obreja

Controller of Business Development, BBC World Service


Ruxandra Obreja is the Controller of Business Development for the BBC World Service.

She is responsible for developing and expanding the BBC's FM networks across the region and identifying partner relations with local FM, MW, SW, satellite, cable and online services.

Ruxandra provides leadership to the business development teams in London, encouraging them to build special relationships with the business communities around the globe.

She ensures Business Development is in close proximity with its customer base and encourages it to exceed targets for both radio and online services in English and the BBC's 32 other language services.

Ruxandra first joined the BBC in 1985 as a producer and presenter with the Romanian service.

She produced and edited news and current affairs programmes, features and documentaries and was one of the voices of the service.

In 1989 Ruxandra was appointed Deputy Head of the BBC Romanian service where she helped with the launch of the BBC office in Bucharest, producing programmes from there and in London.

A year later she became its Head and was instrumental in doubling the number of partnerships in Romania and Moldova which included one with the Telecommunications Ministry in Moldova.

She also appeared regularly on the BBC World daily TV programme Europe Today.

In 1997 Ruxandra was appointed Regional Editor for the BBC European region.

Later she worked as a Strategy Project Manager for the World Service management team.

In 1999 Ruxandra became Commissioning Editor with the BBC English Network and News section. In this role she worked very closely with the BBC World service business development teams to help with the promotion of English programmes rebroadcasting through partner stations across the world.

In 2005 Ruxandra coordinated a week of special programming in English about China for the BBC World Service. She did the same in 2006 for special programming on Energy.
