Nick Owen is the main presenter on BBC Midlands Today.
Born in 1947, Nick was
educated at Shrewsbury School and Leeds University, from where he graduated with
a BA (Hons) in Classics.
Nick's career in journalism began on the Doncaster Evening Post.
He then moved
to the Birmingham Post, and what was then BBC Radio Birmingham, before joining
ATV's sports department - commentating and reporting on the World Cup in 1982.
When ITV Central won the Independent Television franchise for the Midlands, Nick
became a general presenter and teamed up with Anne Diamond for the first time.
In 1983, Nick joined ITV's flagship breakfast programme, TV-am, for its launch
as sports presenter, but took over the main anchor role within eight weeks.
Here
he renewed his partnership with Anne Diamond, and they presented the programme
together until late 1986.
Nick then joined ITV Sport as presenter of Midweek Sport Special.
He also hosted
its Olympic and World Cup coverage as well as a variety of other sports
programmes, including athletics and boxing.
He went on to anchor the game shows Sporting Triangles and Hitman, as well as
presenting all of ITV's Royal Premieres between 1986 and 1992.
He moved to the
BBC in 1992 to present Good Morning with Anne and Nick.
When the show finished in 1996 after 600 programmes, Nick presented a variety of
programmes around the country.
These included North East Tonight, The Football
Show for Tyne Tees, a live, weekly variety show for West Country Television and
documentaries and consumer shows for Meridian.
In addition, Nick has also been a
regular presenter for the Travel Channel.
Since 1997, Nick has been the main anchor on BBC Midlands Today, presenting the
6.30pm programme on BBC ONE, along with fellow anchor, Suzanne Virdee.
Nick is married with four children. He is a self-confessed football and cricket
fanatic.
