Julie Gardner
joined BBC Wales from London Weekend Television, where she had been
Development Producer, in July 2003.
At LWT Julie produced dramas including Me And Mrs Jones
and a multi award-winning modern version of Othello - set controversially
amid corruption and racism in the Metropolitan Police.
Born in Neath in June 1969 and brought up in nearby
Glynneath where she went to primary school, Julie attended Llangatwg
Comprehensive School and Neath Tertiary College before going on to read
English at the University of London.
She returned to Wales to teach English for a year at
Rhondda College of Further Education in Llwynypia before her first stint
at the BBC.
There, Julie worked on highly successful BBC ONE drama
series such as Silent Witness, The Mrs Bradley Mysteries and Sunburn
before moving to London Weekend Television in 2000.
Returning to the BBC, Julie replaced Matthew Robinson
as Head of Drama for BBC Wales.
Within weeks, BBC Wales captured the coveted network commission of the return of Doctor Who, written by Russell T Davies and starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper.
The new series attracted critical acclaim and was a major hit with audiences when it was screened in 2005.
There was also a Christmas 2005 special and a further run is now in production, starring David Tennant as the new Time Lord.
Further BBC Wales network commissions include May 33rd – a controversial study of multiple personality disorder – starring Lia Williams; Casanova, starring David Tennant; Girl In A Café starring Bill Nighy and Kelly Macdonald; Rocket Man, starring Robson Green; and Life on Mars, starring John Simm.
