Nic Newman

Future Media Controller, Journalism


Nic Newman is Future Media Controller for Journalism, co-ordinating the BBC's plans for News, Sport, Weather and Local in the Future Media space.

Nic was one of the founding members of BBC News Online, Europe's most visited news website. He was World Editor from 1997 to 2001 and since then has led the Technology and Product Development divisions.

Nic also oversaw the launch of five BBC World Service language sites in 1999.

Nic recently headed a team looking at the BBC's strategy for search/find in the on-demand world. He is involved in other key BBC multimedia initiatives including BBC iPlayer, mobile and handheld initiatives, social media, audio and video podcasting.

He is author of a working paper for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism on the rise of social media and its impact on mainstream journalism (September 2009).

Previously Nic was a radio presenter, a TV reporter and Executive Editor of BBC news and current affairs programmes including Newshour, Outlook and The World Today for the World Service.

Documentary credits include award-winning documentaries Fall Of The Berlin Wall (1989), South Africa (1991) and Guide To The Information Superhighway for BBC World Service (1995).

Nic sits on the BBC's Journalism Board and the Future Media & Technology Group Board.
