Jan will bring insight and analysis to Euro 2008 with the BBC Radio 5 Live team.
Former Liverpool and Denmark midfield
maestro Jan is fondly remembered by
fans for his impressive Scouse accent as well
as his on-field prowess.
He won two championships and two FA Cups
with the Reds after signing from Ajax in
summer 1984 and, in total, spent almost 12
years on Merseyside.
In the 2006 poll "100
Players Who Shook The Kop", which was
conducted by the official Liverpool Football
Club website, Jan came in at number 16 – the
highest placed overseas player on the list.
While at Liverpool, Jan scored a total of 62
goals – 42 of which were from penalties. In
fact, during his time at Anfield, he only failed to
score three times from the penalty spot and
still holds the club record for the most
penalties scored by a Liverpool player.
Jan became manager of Swansea City in
February 1996, taking them to the Division
Three play-off final the following season – where
they heartbreakingly lost to a last-minute
Northampton goal.
After leaving Swansea he joined
Kidderminster Harriers in April 1999, leading
them to the Conference title and promotion
to the Football League in his first season. Their
consolidation in Division Three led to Jan
being courted by Hull City, but his tenure
there was brief and he returned to
Kidderminster for another season before
bowing out of management.
