Peter Jefferson joined the BBC in 1964, beavered away in an office for a year, and spent another couple of years in a tape library in Bush House, supplying all the BBC language services with their programmes.
He became a studio manager and was then invited to become an announcer for a trial period on the BBC World Service.
A year later, having satisfied the powers that be - and convinced himself - that there were worse jobs, he moved to the former Home Service and Light Programme.
He also regularly read news summaries and filled in on late night shows as a DJ on BBC Radio 2.
He moved back to the World Service for three years and in 1974 arrived at BBC Radio 4, where he stayed until early retirement in 2001.
Peter now works as a freelancer on Radio 4 and also appears in plays, Quote Unquote and Poetry Please.
When not working for Radio 4, he spends much of his time on photography and anything to do with cars.
Most recently, he has taken up short story writing and eagerly awaits his first commission.
