A six week contract can be a very long time in an actor's life, as Patricia Greene discovered when she joined The Archers in 1957.

Fifty years on and she's still playing the part of Jill Archer in the BBC Radio 4 drama.

Born in Derby in 1931 as an only child Patricia, or Paddy, gained a scholarship to grammar school and in 1951 began a drama course at the Central School of Speech and Drama, which was then housed in the Royal Albert Hall.

She has enjoyed working in all aspects of the media during her long career.

Other paid employment has included working in a children's hospital, being a dogsbody in a sheet metal works, a barmaid, bus conductress and waitress.

Patricia's personal interests also show a tendency towards the media as they include attending the theatre, reading daily newspapers with crosswords and sudoku, television, radio and the company of her friends.

She is also a keen member of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies.

Patricia has one son, Charles, born in 1972. She was widowed in 1986.
