Carol Malia presents BBC Look North in the North East and Cumbria region.
Hailing from Cullercoats, a small fishing village in North Tyneside, Carol grew up watching local news and listening to BBC Radio Newcastle which instilled an early interest in the news.
When her English teacher suggested to her at the age of 14 that she should consider working in journalism it set her on a path to her future career.
After her A-levels Carol took a course with the National Council for the Training of Journalists and joined the Hartlepool Mail as a trainee reporter. By the end of her four years with the paper she had progressed to Chief Reporter.
Carol decided to move into broadcast journalism, taking a job at BBC Radio Cumbria as a producer and reporter.
This led to a brief spell on Border TV, which is where she started presenting on breakfast, before moving back to the east of the country to present and report on Tyne Tees Television in Newcastle.
After a year with Tyne Tees, Carol received a phone call from the BBC asking if she would consider applying for a reporter vacancy on Look North. She got the job and in 1996 became the programme's main presenter.
During her time as a presenter on Look North the programme has won a Royal Television Society national programme award and two BBC Ruby Awards.
When not presenting Carol likes to spend time walking in the hills and along the coastlines of the north east and, when conditions suit, skiing at Weardale Ski Club in the north Pennines.
