She spent the previous eight years in the Middle East – moving between Cairo, Amman, Jerusalem and Baghdad.

Caroline covered the lead-up to the war that toppled Saddam Hussein but was expelled from Iraq in late 2002. She returned to Baghdad in April 2003, reporting on key moments in the country's recent history – including the handover of power, and the capture of Saddam Hussein as well as countless bombings and kidnappings.

Her first job at the BBC was as Planning Editor for the Arabic Service.

Her interest in Africa recently took her to Southern Africa to report on the Zimbabwe crisis.

Caroline began her career in journalism with Newsweek Magazine as Special Correspondent in Jerusalem between 1991 and 1994.

She has also reported for several other publications including The Times and The Independent.
