George McGhee

Controller, Programme Acquistion


George McGhee was born in Glasgow, educated at Douglas Academy and then studied media at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design.

After joining Scottish TV in 1979, George worked his way up to film and tape editor mainly working on documentary, then moved into management under Lord Gus Macdonald in Programme Acquisitions.

George left Scottish Television in early 1993 to work for UIHP setting up two channels in the Czech Republic.

In late 1993, George joined Carlton TV as the Controller of Programme Acquisition, later becoming Director of Carlton Cinema in 1997 as part of On-Digital until its closure in 2003.

George then arrived at the BBC as Controller, Programme Acquisition.

Since George's arrival, Programme Acquisition has acquired leading international awarding-winning series such as Medium, Kath And Kim, Damages, The Tudors, Mad Men and Heroes, and films including Pirates Of The Caribbean, Shrek, Wallace & Gromit: Curse Of The Were Rabbit and Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
