BBC Worldwide extends channel distribution to cruise ships

BBC Worldwide will showcase its new thematic channel portfolio to the international maritime industry at the 2009 Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami Exhibition (March 16-19th), marking the first time the company has made its five new genre channels - BBC Entertainment, BBC Lifestyle, BBC Knowledge, CBeebies and BBC HD - available to cruise ships.

Broadening the distribution of the new channels to include sea carriers follows the success of BBC World News which is currently available as a live channel on 80 cruise ships including Crystal Cruises, Cunard, Fred.Olsen, Norwegian Cruise Line, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean International.

From March, vessels travelling on routes across the Mediterranean will be able to subscribe to 24 hour live feeds of BBC Entertainment, BBC Lifestyle, BBC Knowledge, CBeebies and BBC HD in English.

Zina Neophytou, Travel Distribution Director, BBC Worldwide Channels said, "It's a massive accomplishment for us to be able now to complement the existing BBC World News service with genre programming. These channels represent some of the best of British programming, so we're delighted to be providing our viewers with even more ways to access them."

Linear versions of the new channels continue to draw in audiences for BBC Worldwide, with recent launches in Africa, Latin America and Scandinavia. BBC Worldwide's portfolio of channels now reaches over 285 homes worldwide.

BBC Entertainment is the natural home of the very best comedy, drama and light entertainment programming from the BBC and other UK production houses. From established favourites such as Waking the Dead, to the thrilling monster-fest Primeval, BBC Entertainment is all about quality shows which really capture the imagination.

BBC Lifestyle offers ideas and inspiration for home, family and everyday life. Taking over from BBC Food, the new channel will continue to provide enticing gastronomic journeys from the UK and around the world in the company of popular chefs such as Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson. But the channel has a wider remit which also covers fashion, property, parenting and personal development - whether it's advice on how best to dress from the dependable What Not To Wear, or overcoming personal demons in A Life Coach Less Ordinary, BBC Lifestyle is a channel to inspire viewers and encourage them to get the most out of their lives.

BBC Knowledge showcases the best of the BBC's award-winning factual and non-fiction entertainment programming. Conveniently scheduled in themed strands (The World, Science & Technology, People, The Past and Business) the channel covers a myriad of interests, from the ever-popular boys and cars spectacular that is Top Gear, to a series of fascinating explorations of musical genres, from classical to rock. BBC Knowledge serves an intelligent and inquisitive audience across a diverse spectrum of factual programming.

Helping to light up little learners is CBeebies, a pre-school channel for children aged six years and under. With an emphasis on educational entertainment and supported by the core BBC values, the channel is trustworthy, reliable, informative and educational. CBeebies offers a mix of new and landmark, high-quality programmes including international hits In the Night Garden, Charlie and Lola and BAFTA award-winning Numberjacks to educate and entertain the BBC's youngest audiences.

BBC HD will offer the best High Definition content with a line-up of award-winning productions from a broad range of programming genres. With unbeatable picture and sound quality, BBC HD will be the closest yet to a genuine home cinema experience.
