BBC Worldwide opens production office in Brazil

NATPE, LAS VEGAS: BBC Worldwide has taken a further step forward in the strategy to grow its international business with a dedicated base in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to cover the Latin America region.

The primary function of the new operation will be to grow BBC Worldwide activities in the area, including expanding its TV distribution, channels and digital media businesses. It will look to partner with networks across Latin America and build on the strong relationships BBC Worldwide has already cemented throughout the area.

Led by Jose Sanchez, VP Latin America, the office will also aim to build on the huge achievements of BBC Worldwide’s production house in LA, headed by Paul Telegdy, SVP Programming & Production, who will oversee Content & Production in the Latin America region.

Latin America is a key market for reality production and local versions of BBC Worldwide’s award winning format Dancing With The Stars have already been licensed to TVN in Chile and are currently in production in Argentina with Artear and SBT Channel Four in Brazil. Other recent BBC formats have included The Weakest Link and Great Britons. The aim is to build on these successes by moving away from the traditional licensing model and begin producing formats together with local partners and utilize the creative expertise of the BBC.

“We are talking to local production companies in the region about possible partnerships,” commented Wayne Garvie, Director Content and Production, BBC Worldwide. “In the future we will also be looking to produce local scripted productions and in time create ideas that will be transferable to other territories.”

Commented Jose Sanchez: “Brazil is one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America and we believe that with the right people and our market knowledge we can create extensive opportunities across all of our business areas.”
