BBC Worldwide Press Releases

BBC Motion Gallery signs global distribution deal with NHK and ABC

BBC Motion Gallery, the footage sales arm of BBC Worldwide, today announced global distribution deals with NHK, Japan's public service broadcaster, and ABC, Australia's public service broadcaster.

Collections of clips from both the NHK and ABC archives can now be viewed on BBC Motion Gallery's online catalogue.

These new partnerships confirm BBC Motion Gallery's position as a leading global force in archive content distribution, representing blue chip national broadcasters as well as specialist archives.

Already the exclusive global representative for the CBS News archive, BBC Motion Gallery now offers more than a million hours of film. Its archive covers more than 110 years of footage including history, events, music, social scenes, wildlife and sport.

NHK International, Inc., an affiliate of NHK, which distributes NHK archive footage outside Japan, has appointed BBC Motion Gallery to represent, market and licence footage from the NHK archive throughout the world, outside Japan.

An exclusive collection of clips has now been placed on BBC Motion Gallery's website, which offers an amazing insight into both traditional and contemporary Japan.

The NHK archive covers lifestyle, natural history, groundbreaking news, science, cutting-edge graphics and locations such as Mount Fuji and Hiroshima, much of which is available in high-definition format.

ABC has appointed BBC Motion Gallery to represent, market and licence a core collection of clips throughout the world, exclusively from the BBC Motion Gallery online site. The clips have been specially selected from ABC's superb archive, which is Australia's largest media collection. The hand picked footage focuses on contemporary Australia, the Asia Pacific region, locations and personalities.

BBC Motion Gallery's Managing Director, Simon Gibbs, said: "We are thrilled to represent footage from two of the world's most prestigious public service broadcasters. Today's announcement extends and diversifies our online catalogue and offers our customers access to an unrivalled global library.

"Adding NHK and ABC's footage collection to BBC Motion Gallery is great news for our clients because it means they can now source, from a single online outlet, the best in Japanese, Australian, American and British footage."

Yoshinori Sekimoto, Director General of NHK's Multimedia Development Department in Tokyo, added: "We at NHK see our high-definition archive as a valuable resource not just for people in Japan but for the whole international community, so we are delighted that we can expose it to a wider audience through BBC Motion Gallery."

"This deal with BBC Motion Gallery reflects our sales strategy to ensure that we maximise all opportunities to distribute our content globally on all available platforms," said Augustus Dulgaro, Manager, ABC Product and Content Sales for ABC Enterprises.

As well as being available through the online service, www.bbcmotiongallery.com, all the new content will be available via BBC Motion Gallery's UK and international offices.
