BBC AMERICA has scooped a prestigious Peabody Award for Viva Blackpool at the 65th Annual Peabody Awards.
The Golden Globe® and BAFTA nominated mini-series is a dazzling love story, thriller and musical all in one.
Viva Blackpool aired on BBC AMERICA in October 2005 and stars David Morrissey (Basic Instinct 2, State of Play), David Tennant (Dr Who, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and Sarah Parish (The Wedding Date, Cutting It, Trust). Written by Peter Bowker it is a BBC/BBC AMERICA co-production which has already won two BANFF Awards.
BBC AMERICA CEO and President, Bill Hilary says: "We're delighted that the Peabody Board has recognized the true quality and innovation of this highly acclaimed drama on BBC AMERICA. Congratulations to the cast and production team whose work has been honored by another prestigious organization."
The fresh appeal of Viva Blackpool, in which the story unfolds through song and dance routines performed by the characters, was summed up by the Peabody Awards: "What would have been at minimum an engrossing tale of ambition, greed and corruption in a depressed seaside city looking to gambling for salvation becomes, with the addition of a song score of pop-music classics and ingeniously staged production numbers, a riveting, at times jaw-dropping entertainment event."
Hailed a " …vibrantly entertainingly hybri" by the Los Angeles Daily News and described by TV Guide as " …a finger-snapping series that blends grit, wit and production numbers," Viva Blackpool was one of the most critically acclaimed scripted dramas of 2005.
The award will be bestowed on Monday, June 5, 2006 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Jon Stewart, anchor of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, will host the event.

THE GEORGE FOSTER PEABODY AWARDS
The Peabody Award is considered one of the most selective and prestigious awards in U.S. television. The Peabody Awards are administered by the University of Georgia's Grady College of journalism and Mass Communication.
The Peabody Board is a 16-member group, comprised of television critics, broadcast and cable industry executives and experts in culture and the arts, that judges the entries. Selection is made by the board following review by special screening committees of UGA faculty, students and staff.
The Peabody Awards, the oldest honor in electronic media, do not recognize categories nor is there a set number of awards given each year. Today the Peabody recognizes distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by stations, networks, producing organizations and individuals.
