Top Gear in full throttle across the Middle East

The BBC's hit motoring programme is set to reach 130 million Arabic speaking viewers when it airs across the Middle East from September, following a new agreement between BBC Library Sales and pan-Arab broadcasting group MBC to produce the local version of the show.

MBC will take the format of the show - a fast moving mix of car reviews, topical motoring issues, comment and special features - and add local features and commentary, giving it a Middle Eastern focus.

As well as regional features such as sand dune racing and rallies, the team shows viewers the latest developments and test results from around the globe. There will also be regular news updates from international motor shows and viewers will participate by voting for their favourite cars via phone and SMS texting.

Lebanese presenter George Showairy, known for sports and car racing programmes on MTV, will host the show alongside his yet unnamed female co-presenter.

Mamdouh Abougabal, Group Marketing and PR Director, MBC, said, "We started working with the BBC a year ago to produce the Middle Eastern version of Top Of The Pops, which has been enormously successful . This deal ensures MBC viewers will get another world-class brand, specially adapted to their tastes. Top Gear is entertaining and informative and sure to make a big impact."

Paul Maidment, Sales and Marketing Director, BBC Library Sales, added, "Working to develop the Top Gear brand in this way is a significant step forward for BBC Library Sales, and we look forward to working with MBC on this and on future projects."

An Arabic edition of BBC Top Gear magazine is already on the shelves across the region.
