BBC Worldwide Press Releases

Albert Square moves further East

Dot, Pat, Pauline, Sharon, Peggy and Phil are set for stardom in the Ukraine as EastEnders debuts on Ukrainian TV with launch of the BBC entertainment channel - BBC PRIME - in the Eastern European republic.

Ukrainian viewers, who can access BBC PRIME for the first time via Volia, the country's leading cable network, will join the EastEnders' current storylines as Dot is attacked, Barry is back in the car lot and Sharon and Vicky meet their long lost brother.

The line up of new programming to the region also includes Top of the Pops, The Weakest Link and Parkinson, with guests such as Tony Bennett, Jeff Bridges and James Nesbitt.

"Bringing BBC programming to viewers in this important developing broadcast market is very exciting and I am sure they will love the entertaining line-up. We are looking forward to working with our partners to bring more of the best of British talent to Ukrainian screens," said Wayne Dunsford, BBC Worldwide's Director of Channels.

Volia President, Sergey Boyko, added, "Cable television has great potential in the Ukraine so introducing such a prestigious channel from the BBC is a strong step forward for our business. BBC PRIME brings a world class selection of programming to our channel line-up."

BBC PRIME is distributed through Volia's subsidiary network, InterVideo Kiev.

Other Central and Eastern European markets already covered by BBC PRIME include Russia, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia and Poland.

Notes to editors: Launched in 1995, BBC PRIME is the BBC's international entertainment channel broadcast to Europe, Africa and the Middle East, via cable and satellite to over 11 million subscribers in over 100 countries and territories. BBC PRIME is among the most popular pan-European channels, relative to its distribution. In terms of weekly viewership relative to 24-hour home distribution, the EMS 2002 survey showed that BBC PRIME ranks fourth among all pan-European channels. The channel broadcasts more than 2200 hours of new programming each year, including Parkinson, Top of the Pops, EastEnders, The Weakest Link and BBC LEARNING (the BBC's unique overnight educational service). This flagship British cable channel shows the best of the award-winning programmes from the BBC - the world's leading programme maker. English subtitles are offered for over half of all programmes on the channel.
