A: The internet's great, apart from all the waiting around.
B: What do you mean?
A: Well, you know, how it takes ages to dial up and connect.

A dial-up connection is a telephone connection. It means that one computer is used to telephone another. Your modem dials up the number, connects with the central computer and there you are. You're on the internet. Most people who connect from home, use a dial up connection. However, it's not the best way of connecting. In fact, it's probably the worst. It's very slow. But, modems are cheap, and if you already have a telephone line in your home, it's the easiest way to get started.

Vox pop 1: I've been using the internet for about a year, but it's driving me mad. It's so slow! I've only got a dial-up connection, and it takes forever to get connected.
Vox pop 2: My dial-up connection is OK. I usually get through first time, but not always. Sometimes it takes two or three goes.
