Points West sign language presenter Lorna Allsop

Lorna Allsop

Lorna's first job was as a computer operator. She'd always wanted to become a fashion model after leaving school but was told she wasn't tall enough. "Life's just so unfair," says Lorna. Presenting the news in sign language makes up for it though.

When Lorna's not on screen with the BBC, she's the Director of the Centre for Deaf Studies at the University of Bristol.

Her work has taken her all over the world helping leading businesses improve global communication for the deaf.

Lorna helped pioneer video technology on mobile phones, making sure it was fast enough to accurately catch hand movements for sign language messaging!

Lorna in action: signing the headlines

Lorna loves travelling, and not just for work - she's toured across Europe and Russia

She's worked the length and breadth of the UK too.

After starting with the University of Bristol in 1978, Lorna headed North to Carlisle and Glasgow to teach hearing people to sign.

That led to a stint in video production and training with the BBC in London - which all gives great grounding to what Lorna does now.

And don't worry if you don't use sign language, if you see Lorna around her home city of Bristol - do say hi.

Lorna can lip read even the broadest Bristolian accent!
