One of Alyn Shipton's first jobs for Radio 3 during his 20 years as a presenter on the station was to introduce what turned out to be Lionel Hampton's final British broadcast; so this edition of Jazz Library has a particular resonance for him. Joining Alyn is author and pianist Brian Priestley, who heard Hampton many times over the years, and who has a particular soft spot for this most energetic of jazz performers. Hampton was not only a masterly drummer and a great innovator on the vibraphone, but he played the piano (mainly with two fingers, but extremely effectively) and he was (in his early years) a fine vocalist. There is, therefore, a vast range of recordings from which to choose the essential Hampton discs.
