Life can become one long battle when toddlers become self-aware and want to get their way, all the time. Does how a parent respond to a child's needs have a lasting effect on the way they form relationships?


Triplets Alice, Mabel and Phoebe are the youngest of six siblings. From day one, they had to compete for their parents' attention and affection. While they were best friends during the day, at night they kept the rest of the family awake with crying and commotion.

Twins Ivo and Alexander perfected the art of the temper tantrum and screamed themselves sick on a daily basis. Their mum, Berenice, was frantic. She said they hadn't been under control for a single day since their birth.

Observation of the family and experimentation revealed the underlying cause of the twins' meltdowns. However, the cure involved Berenice being hard-hearted - and she wasn't sure she could go ahead with it.

Disabled mother Alison had a more serious issue: how to discipline her son, Parys, as he became bigger and stronger than her. She used one of the most effective tools of control - efficient use of language.
