In the previous series of Child of Our Time, we showed for the first time that at the age of one children can recognise music they heard in the womb. But did our children subconsciously remember other things they were only exposed to in the womb or in their first 18 months of life? 'Forgotten' childhood experiences can have a tangible, physical effect on us decades later. Incredible as it seems, our brains hold memories of events from around the time of our births, even though we have no conscious recollection of them.
What happens when a child witnesses the breakdown of their parents' relationship? By the time she was one, Charlotte had learnt to hide her fears and sadness. At the age of two, she still didn't show emotion and hardly ever smiled. What does being unwanted do to a child? Jamie's mother, Sharon, had been sterilised - she only realised the operation hadn't worked when she got pregnant. But while she'd never managed to really bond with little Jamie, her husband Ian certainly did. Find out why it's important for children to gain independence in programme 2.
