Planning ahead Tyrese's mum, Marie, volunteered for the Child of Our Time project before she was pregnant. She already had two daughters: Tanesha with husband Jamal and Chanel from a previous relationship. Tyrese was born at home. At the time, Marie worked in the catering industry and Jamal had a job in a factory. Marie then took a second job as a waitress. As a toddler, Tyrese was a thrill-seeker but, once at nursery, he revealed a shy side. He was slow to start speaking and this may have contributed to his lack of self-confidence. Dyslexia worries On a trip to New York to visit relatives, Jamal and Marie had Tyrese tested for dyslexia. Marie is dyslexic and the New York psychologists thought Tyrese may have inherited dyslexic tendencies from her. While on this trip, Marie and Jamal decided to separate. Jamal was brought up by his father and is determined not to lose touch with his children. Tyrese and Tanesha spend alternate weeks with each parent. Last year, Marie gave up her jobs and started her own business, selling custom-made dresses. Love of musicAs Tyrese has grown, his language skills have improved dramatically. He's now a sociable little boy. He has a great love of music, and enjoys singing and dancing.
