Difficult beginning Rubin was born at 37 weeks and rushed straight to intensive care. Two months after going home, he contracted pneumonia and went back to hospital. His mother, Debi, was a single parent with two older children, Ayden and James. She had a lot of support and is on friendly terms with her children's fathers, including Rubin's dad, Ian. Growing bond Debi left home at 15 and was homeless for a while. She still attended college, she says, because it was warm. Following a three-year course, Debi is now a breastfeeding counsellor. At one time, Debi was concerned that her bond with Rubin wasn't as strong as she'd like, perhaps because of the difficulties surrounding his birth. Now, however, things are changing. Strong personality Rubin is a charming boy with a strong sense of humour. He gets on well with his brothers and is happy at school. He's an extremely able student and was recently selected for a pupil-enrichment programme. Debi is proud of her son's achievements and believes school has boosted his confidence. As he has become more able to express his feelings, their relationship has improved dramatically.
