Start in life James was born at home. His mother, Carol, had only just moved into her council flat with her daughter, Bernie, and James' father, Jamie, both of whom were present at the birth. Carol comes from a deprived background. Her mother died when she was 11, and she was sent to a boarding school before being fostered. She's determined her children will have a better life. Difficult times When James was three, his parents separated. Carol's next boyfriend was abusive to Carol. In 2004, Carol, James and Bernie fled to a women's refuge and were then rehoused in a safe flat. In 2005, James was abducted by Carol's ex-boyfriend, but returned safely a few hours later. A prosecution followed, and James and Bernie feel safe with Carol again. Safe haven From the time James first went to nursery, he has found school to be a safe haven. He's an able boy with bundles of energy and enthusiasm - sometimes more than Carol can cope with - and is generous and caring friend.
