Close-knit family Het was born into a close-knit family and lives with her parents, Vijay and Tejal, and her paternal grandparents. Het's parents met through a newspaper advertisement placed by Vijay's parents when he was visiting India. Tejal, then an IT teacher, left India and moved to London, where Vijay was an accountant. Language development Het is a charming, determined and intelligent child, quiet with strangers but talkative in her first language, Gujarati. She was slow to learn English, but that changed when she went to school. Now she's almost fluent. Tejal, meanwhile, took evening classes in computing, which led to a job as an IT technician. New arrival The birth of a brother, Krish, led to changes in Het's life. She felt left out and protested angrily. Her parents considered sending her to India to attend the boarding school where Tejal was educated. Instead, they worked to make Het feel more included. Vijay even took Het along on his successful campaign to become a local Liberal councillor. Het has got over her bad moods and realises being the eldest has advantages. Having a little brother, she feels, might even be a good thing.
