Charlotte L, aged seven

"He's a human being, of course. He can't be a doggy - he doesn't go: 'Woof, woof'"

Charlotte L

Country life

Charlotte L as a baby

Charlotte’s parents, Jacqui and Richard, met when they worked at a printing company owned by Richard's family. Richard was a manager and Jacqui a graphic designer.

They decided to move to the country and bought a house in need of renovation. Jacqui then found out she was pregnant with twins, the result of the couple's first attempt at IVF.

Charlotte's twin

Jacqui went into labour four weeks early, on 19 December 1999. The male twin, Alexander, was stillborn. Charlotte, however, flourished and was a happy, healthy baby.

Eight months later, Jacqui discovered she was pregnant again. Jasmine was born in May 2001. A few months later, Jacqui and Richard married.

After two years, they separated. They've worked hard not to let their separation have a negative effect on Charlotte and Jasmine. They remain civil and Richard sees the children frequently.

Charlotte and Jasmine are bright, happy and outgoing children. They are very close to each other and equally at home in both parents' houses.
