Young mum Charlie's mum, Toni, was 16 when she found out she was pregnant. She'd recently broken up with her boyfriend, but decided to go ahead with the pregnancy on her own. Toni's mother Anne, grandmother Barbara and great-grandmother Kate had all had their babies young and weren't keen for Toni to follow suit, but they supported her. Toni has a Romany heritage and believed a curse long ago prevented any babies in the family being boys. Her daughter, Charlie, was born just after New Year 2000. Growing family Toni then began a new relationship with an old friend, Rob, and Charlie was soon joined by sister Kayla and, three years later, brother Alex. Toni's teenage pregnancy meant she left school without many qualifications. But she trained as a carer and, in 2006, was nominated Carer of the Year. Charlie's personality Charlie is an active, independent and rebellious child, and her strong character and ability to make people laugh mean she's very popular. She's not academically confident, but likes reading and writing. There's never a quiet moment at home, with Kayla and Alex sharing Charlie's lively nature.
