Children's building blocks

Toys: six to 12 months

Jane Kemp

Your baby may be starting to move around independently, which offers new possibilities for chasing and finding toys. Your baby is also stronger and his hand-eye coordination has improved.

On the move

Wooden blocks - great for building up, knocking down and banging together.

Building bricks - first construction bricks can be enjoyed from this age, although you'll need to guide your baby's hands to help him put them together.

Balls - when your baby's able to sit up he'll enjoy rolling a ball to you and 'catching' it as you roll it back. Balls also encourage movement as your baby crawls after them.

Board books - sit your baby on your lap and show him chunky board books that he can safely put in his mouth.

Stacking toys - your baby will need help to get them in the right order, but when he's one year old he'll enjoy stacking activities. Putting an object under stacking cups for your child to find adds to the fun.

Stick-on rattle - a suction pad attaches the toy to a smooth surface, such as a highchair tray or car window.

Squish and squeeze - soft rubbery toys that feel nice to hold and make a sound when squeezed will appeal to your baby.

First flap books - many first books have simple flaps, which your baby will quickly learn to fold back. Lifting flaps helps to keep babies interested for longer.

Keep a selection of small toys and safe household objects in a large plastic bowl. Your baby will enjoy taking them out and putting them all back again.
