Henley
Rowing Club competed in the Thames Challenge Cup of the regatta
which consists of 32 club crew eights competing from Wednesday to
Sunday in a knock out competition.
The
Final was reached after a 1 3/4 length victory on Wednesday over
Furnivall, 1 length win over Reading Rowing Club on Thursday, A
close third of a length over Nott's County on Friday, and Saturday
a 1 1/2 length beating of London RC "A" crew.
They
raced Lady Elizabeth Boat Club, Ireland in the final and won by
1 length.
The
crew consisted of Johnny Smith Willis, Nick Friend, David Read,
David Lambourn, Ariel Perez Calderon, Jasper Hasell, Charles Friend,
Richard Guiver, cox Avery Penna, and coach Ian Desmond.
The
closest the Club had been to a Henley Medal was in 1976 when they
reached the final of the Thames Cup but lost by three feet to Harvard.
Many of that defeated crew where at Henley on Sunday to share in
this victory.
The
crew members had a very tough year training hard and seat racing
other members of the club to earn their place in the seat of the
eight.
The
boat had previous wins during the season at Nottingham City, and
the Metropolitan Regatta, but Henley Royal Regatta was the regatta
to win - and the crew pulled it off amazingly.
