Unbelievable
Strewth! There's a queue to get upstairs at the Wheatsheaf to see
the debut performance of new Oxford supergroup Nine Stone Cowboy,
including Mark Willis former guitarist with Medal, Jimmy Crosskey
from The Unbelievable Truth and Mark Cope formerly of the Candyskins.
Perhaps
it's because its been so long since we heard from these bands that
the audience is chocabloc with Oxford scenesters, including Nick
Moorbath (The Zodiac) Chloe Horner (Truck Records) and Tim Turan
(Turan audio) who mastered the album.
Theres a genuine friends-and-family warmth in the air with whoops
and cheers of encouragement given at every opportunity.

But
does the music merit their rapturous response? There's the pop nuance
of the Candyskins about several of these songs, but they're somehow
more urgent, perhaps a little bit darker. The lyrics are often humorous,
subject matter includes a dad dressing up in mum's clothing (disappointingly
not autobiographical, Mark's dad is Carry On actor Kenneth Cope
after all!)
Headlining
the show are 100 Bullets Back, with, yes, another ex Candyskin,
drummer John Halliday (now running Shonk Studios). Already known
on the county's music scene, they play a typically highly charged
set in a Futureheads vein. No doubt they'll appear on these pages
soon.
