MusicYou are in: Oxford > Entertainment > Music > A song for the fish ![]() Tim Bearder and Brian Briggs A song for the fishBy Tim Bearder A local band release a song which helps you to think responsibly when buying fish. Help playing audio/video The fish in our seas seem to have few friends with many environmentalists fearing that some species could be fished to extinction. Our appetite for the aquatic is potentially going to seriously affect the ecosystem and in the long term might lead to a total collapse of commercial fish stocks. But this catastrophe could be averted by the customer making the right choice when they buy the fish they choose to eat.
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is working hard to promote sustainable fisheries and have produced a guide which recommends species you can eat with a clean conscience as well as the ones you should avoid. Until now they’ve only had a written guide but then the Oxford group Stornoway got involved and, inspired by one of their posters, wrote “The Good Fish Guide” to help the society in their crusade. The song has been released on Oxfordshire’s Truck Records ahead of the release of the draft version of the Marine Bill which aims to improve the conservation of marine biodiversity, where existing provisions do not suffice. “The Good Fish Guide” song will be available to download from eTunes and iTunes with all profits donated to the MCS. It also features on Stornoway’s EP “On the Rocks” which will contain a free wallet-sized copy of the MCS Good Fish Guide. So with the song on your MP3 player and the guide in your hand you’ll be fully equipped to make the right choice next time you go to the supermarket. last updated: 02/05/2008 at 15:26 SEE ALSOYou are in: Oxford > Entertainment > Music > A song for the fish This week's show
