The Butterfly Tattoo

It’s going to be a movie aimed at the teenage market, shot in Oxford and written by a local author. But the best thing is that the soundtrack will feature the cream of local bands.

The Butterfly Tattoo by Philip Pullman is a tragic love story set in the gap between the honey-stoned majesty of a fairy tale Oxford and the gritty vibrancy of areas like the Cowley Road – a tale where naivety meets streetwise.

A team of filmmakers are adapting the story of two star-crossed lovers from the pages of the book into what they hope will be a celluloid masterpiece. The director Phil Hawkins is adamant that he wants to make use of local talent to illustrate Oxford, complete with its many assets. The whole soundtrack will be made up of local bands and locations like the Jericho Tavern are featured.

Philip Pullman is famed for bringing his hometown to life in his books and this film is set to carry on that ethos. When this video was shot there were two weeks left on the five week shoot, with the premiere slated for sometime in February/March 2008.

For a local music fan it will be like watching Inspector Morse with an added audio element. Personally I can’t wait.
