About Us

CSV stands for Community Service Volunteers. CSV is a charity that helps recruit volunteers for other charities and community projects.

The CSV Action Desk team work together like a well oiled machine, but most of them do their job in the depths of BBC Oxford without being recognised so here is your comprehensive guide to the CSV Action Desk Team....

What is the CSV Action Desk??

CSV - stands for Community Service Volunteers. CSV is a charity that helps recruit volunteers for other charities and community projects.
One department of CSV is the CSV Action Desk. There is an Action Desk based at every local BBC station around the UK, with an Action Desk Producer and CSV volunteers. The CSV Action Desk does many things, such as run social action campaigns and community or charity appeals on air (Radio, Web and TV) and produces off-air support material, like information fact sheets which we send out to back up alot of the on air material.

How does the CSV Action Desk Work??

Emma Lerche-Thomsen

A chance phone call from the Action desk at BBC Oxford a couple of years ago launched me back into office life.  I took up the chance to volunteer on the Action desk and have since been involved with so many events - finding gifts to give the homeless at Christmas, helping people do their family tree, encouraging people to get active and sourcing interviewees for our most recent campaign 'Find a Family' for fostering.

As a working mum for many years, I've loved getting back into work, meeting fantastic people and supporting some really worthwhile campaigns - thanks Action Desk.

I worked as a volunteer for at least one day a week on the CSV Action Desk at Oxford for about 3 years.  So far I've worked with 3 Action Desk Producers and their attitude towards volunteers was very flexible, relaxed and appreciative – that’s why I stayed so long!

I came from full time teaching so I'm able to use my research and communication skills and also enjoy the new challenges that are thrown my way.

The work is really rewarding because I feel appreciated by the charities and volunteers I help to get to work together and by the individuals who contact the Action Desk for help or information.  I’ve particularly enjoyed working with presenter Phil Mercer organising monthly BBC Oxford Get Active walks - I get to meet some lovely listeners and to see some wonderful parts of the county.
