Cowley Road Carnival!It's Oxfordshire's answer to Notting Hill and it's back and even bigger than before! East Oxford’s annual all-day celebration takes place on Sunday 1st July 2007 noon-6pm (Free entry). There's fun for all the family in Oxford's most colourful event! Last year's Carnival attracted over 20,000 people to Cowley to party in the streets and this year it's set to be busier than ever with the return of it's infamous colourful parade. ![]() Don't miss the colourful procession! Other highlights include live music stages featuring world music, folk, rock and reggae, sound systems playing ska, house and garage music and performances by both local and national bands, schools and youth theatres. And it's not all just music and processions. Expect to see street theatre, magicians, face painting, story telling, circus acts and delicious food from all over the world. Organisers of this years carnival are on a mission to recruit approximately 100 volunteers to help out on the day. By volunteering, not only do you get to be part of this colourful community event but you will may well be in store for other treats provided by local organisations like free tickets and free meals out.
![]() Carnival Queen, Olive McIntosh-Stedman If you want to get involved, shifts are three hours long and all you need to do is call the carnival office on 01865 200 780 or drop an email carnival@eastoxford.com . 1,000 years...In keeping with the elemental themes of previous years, this time the event is based around 'Fire'. It is also tied into two campaigns dear to the heart of BBC Oxford - the current celebration of 1000 years of Oxfordshire and the 200 year anniversary since the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. The parade, which aims to involve the whole community, starts from The Plain and moves up the Cowley Road which will be closed to all traffic. Expect all the usual costumes, singing, dancing and general party atmosphere. The event aims to celebrate the diversity of the East Oxford Community, offering entertainment for all the family. We are promised stages of world music, folk and urban alongside rock from bands young and old.
