In fact these Green Men are mysterious leafy masks or a face with plants streaming from his mouth, eyes or nose. It's highly likely you walk past a Green Man everyday but don't realise it. Well, now is the time to get your investigative eye on and let us know when you see one.

As part of the Faces of Oxfordshire project, writer and broadcaster Tim Healey is on a mission to find as many Green Man figures throughout the county as possible. Listen to what we found... Tim joined BBC Oxford's Clare Beamond at Merton College Chapel, Oxford to explain more about the trail and the Green Men you can find there. Green Men usually appear in some of the earliest parish churches, cathedrals in 18th-century keystones and Victorian door surrounds. They are normally sculpted in stone or carved in wood. He can however also turn up in stained glass, ceramics, ironwork or even in paintings. Have a look in our image gallery to get an idea of what you should look out for. Tim has been tracing the Green Man for numerous years and has managed to track down lots within our county but he is now enlisting your help. If you think you have found one then get in touch with Tim via email. |
