Take a RiskTake a Risk is performed by Oxford Impro, an Oxfordshire based theatre company at the Unicorn Theatre, Abingdon on Sunday 25th November. Oxford Impro are offering just that! So, if you've ever fancied calling the shots then now is your chance because Oxford Impro want you to inspire them with your suggestions. The production will see the audience and the actors work together to create stories and sketches which will entertain you. ![]() You can call the shots... The improvisors are made up of people from all over the county. They have joined forces to full fill their needs for creativity and spontaneity in their lives. It's hoped that the 'Take a Risk' performances will encourage more people throughout Oxfordshire to join in as well. These shows are all part of the Oxfordshire 2007 celebrations which are marking the 1000th birthday of our county. So this year why not embark on something new and discover more about about the magic of improvised theatre. What is Improvisation?Improvisation is the art of acting and reacting, in the moment, to one's surroundings. It can lead to the invention of new thought patterns or even new ways to act. This invention cycle is more likely to occur when it is accompanied with a thorough understanding of the skill being improvised. The art of improvisation requires high levels of concentration, the ability to think on your feet, quick decision making and being open to other people's ideas. Oxford Impro practice regularly which helps the team build trust and develop their skills. They are also keen to stick to their original philosophy which means not relying on gags for laughs or gaining audience affection at the expense of another improvisor. They also aim to not limit themselves to scenes which they know have worked well in the past but taking the risk of bringing forward new material. Get involvedIf you not only like the idea of being able to suggest ideas at performances but also fancy doing some of the improvising yourself then you can join in one of Oxford Impro's workshops. ![]() Oxford Impro at the Summertown festival It doesn't matter if you have never done it before as you will be trained in the techniques on how to improvise, even though you will never really know exactly what you will be doing, which is the beauty of improvisation.
