Faces of Oxfordshire
Portraits on spoons? It's all part of a mission to produce 1000 wooden spoon people as a collective work of art to celebrate Oxfordshire's big birthday. It's just one of the exciting Faces of Oxfordshire events which you can get involved in!
The race is on!
Make sure that you are part of the race to create 1000 wooden spoon faces. The aim is to have one for each year of Oxfordshire's history.
You really have read that right - The Spoon Race team are asking you to put a portrait on a spoon! Portraits will range from the only English Pope, Dr Ashmole to Tim Henman, Richard Branson and Radiohead.
Alternatively you can create a portrait of yourself as the idea is to represent the county's citizens past and present.
The spoon people will be displayed on a purpose-made sweeping ‘runway’ table, which will be exhibited at Modern Art Oxford in October 2007, alongside further workshops and smaller displays in museums around Oxfordshire including Wantage, Banbury and Henley Museums and The Ashmolean.
The idea for this project grew from a group of artists and parents who run the after school art club in SS Philip and James Primary School, Oxford, and was conceived by Francesca Shakespeare during an Oxford Inspires symposium for community events.
Lots of children are joining the race...
The latest school to take part was Woodstock Primary School. Have a look at how they got on by clicking on the link below.
The Spoon Race team has already visited lots of schools and over 200 children have participated so far. The first sponsored spoons, where sponsors are paired up with local artists, have been commissioned by The Ashmolean, Oxford Art Society and Balliol, Merton and Exeter Colleges.
Sponsor a spoon
The Spoon Race team is looking to raise further funds from sponsorship through local businesses and institutions, who are invited to sponsor a spoon. Sponsors will be paired up with an artist who will paint a spoon portrait of their founder, director or any other Oxfordshire figure.
Spoon Race is supported by Modern Art Oxford, Oxford Inspires, Kids@art and Artweeks. For further information either about the Spoon Race project or to sponsor a spoon, contact Francesca Shakespeare at Francesca@spoonrace.co.uk or phone on 01865-513184 or 07976-822773. Alternatively you can visit the Spoon Race website.
