On Saturday the 24th February 2007 at The Zodiac on Cowley Road, Oxford was host to some of Oxford’s best home grown bands. The line up for the night consisted of DJ’s ‘Party Sausage’ and ‘Shank you For a Penny‘, along with a very interesting line up of bands. The Palace of Righteous Justice have members whose names - unfortunately - are not suitable to be mentioned in this review. Their set was rounded off with ‘I Like Knockers’ which added a final element of hilarity before the night really kicked off. Act two, Baby Gravy, performed a brilliant set, with lead singer Iona Rosin giving an uplifting source of entertainment, with her original outfits and outstanding voice. This was then backed up even more with Freddy Mason’s mind blowing keyboard skills. The great performance enhanced the life of the audience as more gathered for The Walk Off later on in the night. Baby Gravy’s music was fantastic and all in all the band turned out to be a great line up of entertainers. If you have heard of them but not had the chance to see them, it would be a highly recommended gig. After a short interval of DJ’s Party Sausage and Shank you for a Penny filling the floor, the third act of the night took to the stage. Mephisto Grande seemed to shock the audience at first with their very unique style of music, however the crowd had not been shocked in a bad way. Fans took to the unusual sounds with enthusiasm and the set turned out to be a great success. However after performing their last song vocalist, guitarist and accordionist Liam Ings - Reeves collapsed on stage and began to fit, leaving the audience stumped. After around ten minutes a very drowsy Reeves was back on his feet after the DJs helped ease the worrying mood of the audience with yet more great music. Finally headline act The Walk Off came on stage, and after being on for around thirty seconds, singer Monsieur Blake announced that they were going to get through the entire set without stopping. It turned out fantastically and was a brilliant part of the night. The music that the three were capable of was outstanding with the electronica/drum ‘n’ bass wrapping the audience into a frenzy and before long the whole crowd were moving to the potent yet influential beats. The Walk Off also come with a great dancing bear who helped the audience on their way, his dancing and crowd surfing keeping the fans moving and really did a lot for the act. By the end of the set, band members Iona of Baby Gravy along with The Palace of Righteous Justice as well as the DJs all joined the headliners on stage for one final freak out, driving the audience crazy for the last fifteen or so minutes of the night.
The Oxford Zodiac really out-did itself with this line up and the hosts of ‘The Download’ show on BBC Radio Oxford also held a special ‘Download Live’ show to cover the evening. All in all the night turned out to be a great experience both for the bands and for the audience. |
