The Christmas Card recycling scheme helped recycle 82 million Christmas cards last year and this year they want to increase that to 90 million. So why not recycle yours? The scheme is being promoted by Woodland Trust , the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. They have teamed up with Recycle Now, the national recycling campaign for England. The cards are taken to paper mills and recycled into brand new paper products. Money raised through the scheme helps the Woodland Trust to save existing woodland and to create new woodland in the UK. It couldn’t be easier, just take your cards along to your nearest Tesco, WHSmith and TK Maxx store between the 2nd and 31st January 2007. There are many benefits from recycling cards: • Recycling paper saves woods and trees • It helps us make a difference to the environment • It saves energy being used to convert timber into paper • It makes people think about consumer waste • It reduces the the waste going into landfill • It reduces the estimated 1 billion Christmas cards that could end up in bins across the UK (Defra) Gareth Lloyd, from Recycle Now, says: “Christmas is traditionally a time when we all create too much waste – usually over three million tonnes. Recycling Christmas cards for the Woodland Trust is just one easy way to help reduce this and help a worthwhile cause at the same time’ Sue Holden, chief executive of the Woodland Trust says ‘ The Trust thanks everyone who supports the campaign each year – it’s a marvelous effort. You’re helping us to plant thousands of new trees and protect the little ancient woodland we have left in the UK’. MORE INFORMATION For tips on recycling visit www.recyclenow.com.
