This Oxford five piece are an exciting prospect, crazed perfectionists: two guitars, a Moog synth, bass, drums and not a sequencer in sight. Sticking my neck out - this is the next big band from Oxford. Creating a digital sound with analogue means, it’s a mesh of imagined pop songs with originality and an edge that cuts. It’s a kind of techno, made with wood, skin and metal. There is an air of tension. They look pensive and uptight, and at one point the drummer has to run off to throw up. This is as it should be, this is their natural state. It is Foals - baby horses with a fierce kick. There is an attention to detail. They take their post rock influences and experiences and use them as fuel to ignite their music. There’s a chorus of guitars, vocals that build from delicate harmony to shouted affirmation and a staccato rhythm section that hovers on the edge between funk and noise with a gang dance mentality. They make a definitive call to dance that the cool kids down the front can’t ignore. They tour soon to spread their equinematic groove to the rest of the UK. |
