The Datsuns by Marc West

The Datsuns interview

By Marc West
Check out the interview and see the pictures as Marc West catches up with the band at The Zodiac.

Having been tucked away in the studio for far too long, they’re back in the UK to what they do best – storming, high-energy shows with breakneck guitars, pumping bass and ragged vocals – and The Datsuns’ return to The Zodiac was far from an exception!

Renewed, reinvigorated and revitalized, New Zealand’s longhaired, denim-clad firebrands are all about impact, right from the first note – and these four young guns have no fear of cliché.

Drawing on the sound of antipodean rock forebears such as AC/DC, this is garage-rock in excess - loud, mean, adrenalin-fuelled, pure unadulterated rock 'n' roll.

In their gloriously simplistic world, riffs are basic and sludge heavy, guitar solos heroic and often utterly unnecessary and lyrical concerns don't stretch much beyond bad women, but the maelstrom of sheer energy bursting from live favourites like In Love, Harmonic Generator and MF From Hell is totally overwhelming.

Stuck Here For Days, the lead track from their new EP, serves as a mere taster of things to come. This is the sound of an already lauded band not risking a complete overhaul of their successful formula, but instead opting for a more mature, bluesy sound in parts and being prolific in their songwriting has given the band new scope – and, no doubt, new fans to come.

Not rocket science, then, but if you wanted a lost Saturday night of full-on debauchery, then The Datsuns would win over every time – believe me!
